Olivia Munn and John Mulaney Announce Birth of Their Second Child Following Munn’s Cancer Battle: ‘Our Little Plum, Little Dragon’

Olivia Munn and John Mulaney are expanding their family!

The 44-year-old actress and her husband, comedian John Mulaney, 42, joyfully welcomed their second child, a daughter, born via gestational surrogate on September 14. The couple shared the happy news on Instagram on Sunday, September 22.

“Méi June Mulaney arrived on September 14, 2024, the Year of the Dragon 🐉,” Munn wrote in an Instagram post, accompanied by a photo of her sitting on Mulaney’s lap, cradling their newborn in a hospital room.

Reflecting on her experience, Munn shared her deep emotions about not being able to carry her daughter herself. “When I met our surrogate, we connected as mothers. Her kindness and understanding touched me deeply—I knew I had met a true angel,” she said. “I can’t express how grateful I am that she carried our baby for nine months, bringing our dream to life.”

Munn wrapped up her heartfelt message by explaining the significance of her daughter’s name. “I’m so proud of my little plum, my little dragon, for making it to us. My heart is overflowing with love,” she wrote, adding that “Méi” (pronounced may) means plum in Chinese, 梅 💜.

The proud mom of two wrapped up her post with a sweet close-up of baby Méi, along with a tender shot of her cradling her daughter by a large window. She also shared a heartwarming family photo, capturing the new family of four gazing out at the ocean together.

John Mulaney also posted on his Instagram, celebrating the arrival of their daughter. “Méi June Mulaney came into the world on September 14, 2024, in the Year of the Dragon 🐉. We took so much stuff from the hospital,” he joked. “I love my little girl so much,” he added.

The comedian, like Munn, clarified the pronunciation and meaning of Méi’s name, adding a purple heart emoji in his caption.

Along with the hospital photo, Mulaney’s Instagram post included a humorous video of baby Méi spitting up on his shirt while he tried to burp her, giving fans a candid glimpse into their new life as a family of four.

The couple’s newest addition joins their 2-year-old son, Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney, who was born on November 24, 2021. Their exciting announcement comes just a few months after they tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in July at a friend’s home in New York state.

According to PEOPLE, the ceremony was officiated by Sam Waterston, Munn’s co-star from *The Newsroom*, with only Malcolm and one witness present to celebrate the occasion.

Earlier this year, in April, Munn opened up about her “terrifying” breast cancer diagnosis, which she received the year before. Her battle included four surgeries, a double mastectomy, and medically induced menopause. Despite the difficult road she faced, the actress shared a hopeful update on September 4 via Instagram, reassuring fans that she was “doing okay.” She posted a video that outlined her cancer journey, explaining that in May 2023, she underwent a nipple delay procedure, lymph node dissection, and a double mastectomy following her diagnosis in April. She also shared that in June, she completed an egg retrieval process, and in September 2023, she had breast reconstruction surgery.

In May, Olivia Munn shared with *Vogue* that following her cancer diagnosis, she chose to freeze her eggs, giving her and John Mulaney the option to grow their family in the future. This was after she had already frozen her eggs at ages 33 and 39.

Her September 4 update provided a detailed timeline of her medical journey, revealing that she underwent lupron treatment in November 2023, followed by a partial hysterectomy and oophorectomy in April 2024, and most recently, arimidex treatment in August 2024.

Despite these challenging treatments, Munn remained focused on her son, Malcolm. In an interview with *PEOPLE* in April, she shared that spending time with him brought her immense joy throughout her health struggles.

“When I’m with him, it’s the only time my mind isn’t consumed by my illness. I’m just so happy with him,” Munn explained. “It really puts everything into perspective. No matter how my body changes—whether I have hot flashes, lose my hair, or feel sick—I’m still his mom. That’s what matters most to me. I’m here for him, and that’s what keeps me going.”

John Mulaney has also expressed his joy about being a dad. During a June 2022 appearance on *Late Night with Seth Meyers*, he shared his excitement over celebrating his first Father’s Day with his son, Malcolm.

“He gave me an array of gifts,” Mulaney joked. “I woke up, had breakfast with him, and his latest thing is when I put the phone in selfie mode and start recording, he grabs it and slowly brings the camera into his mouth. So, all his films end with the same plot twist.”

More recently, Malcolm was by his mom’s side as they celebrated Olivia Munn’s 44th birthday in July. The actress shared a heartwarming video on Instagram of her little boy saying, “Happy birthday, Mommy!” and telling her how much he loved her.
